Transanal radiofrequency therapy, Secca, is an alternative noninvasive procedure for the treatment of fecal incontinence: the inability to control the passage of gas, liquid and/or solid stool. This lack of control is usually the result of weakened/injured sphincter muscles often associated with muscle/nerve damage resulting from vaginal delivery or other causes.
Secca uses radiofrequency energy delivered to the sphincter muscles which causes collagen growth and improves muscle strength and continence. The Secca procedure is proposed as an alternative treatment for patients who have not responded to medical therapy, are not good surgical candidates, or when prior surgical intervention was unsuccessful. It is preformed in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia.
